The insatiable quest of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to retain power as Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South is gradually generating tension in the constituency ahead of the parliamentary primaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) on January 27.
The incumbent MP, popularly known as NAPO is said to be instigating the disqualification of one of his contenders, Kwabena Addo Amankwah on the grounds of not being a voter in the constituency.
Reports from the constituency suggest that NAPO who has gone unopposed since becoming the MP is scared of losing the contest and is bent on preventing one of the aspirants from competing to brighten his chances of winning.
Making it even more difficult for the embittered MP is the fact that a former Constituency Women’s Organiser, Helena Pinamang Owusu is also in the race to oust him.
This, many believe, is a vote of no confidence in the MP who is seeking a fifth term in office.
Political watchers in and outside the constituency are of the firm conviction that NAPO’s excuse for the disqualification of Amankwah is not strong enough to deny the gentleman his right to contest.
They are backing their argument with the case of Charles Opoku who was cleared by the party to contest the Assin North by-election on the ticket of the NPP despite not being a voter in the constituency.
Proponents of this argument believe that if the party kowtows to the demand of the MP, it may cause disaffection in the constituency, a situation that could affect the overall performance of the NPP in the crucial 2024 general elections.
The question on the lips of stakeholders in the forthcoming primary is whether the incumbent is afraid of being contested.
