Goals from Jonathan Sowah and Vincent Atingah aided Medeama SC to hand a 2-0 defeat on Asante Kotoko in the match-week 23 of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League on Sunday evening.
Asante Kotoko suffered their first home defeat of the season to the Yellow and Mauves lads at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The Porcupine Warriors were handed a major boost in the technical team with the return of coach Seydou Zerbo, who left the shores of Ghana to Burkina Faso following the demise of his seven-year old son.
The Yellow and Mauves commenced the game with an intense pressure on the backline of Asante Kotoko to open the score within the quarters.
In-form Jonathan Sowah fired the lead for Medeama SC with a brilliant header from Fordjour’s shot in the box of Asante Kotoko on the 15th minute of the game.
The home side warmed themselves into the game to turn the pressure on the visitors but none of their efforts earned them the leveller.
Goalkeeper Felix Kyei made a sparkling save on the 38th minute to deny Enock Morrison from snatching the equalizer for Asante Kotoko.
The Porcupine Warriors failed to level the score before the break despite their impressive performance in the last fifteen minutes.
Back from the break, Medeama SC shifted the momentum to dominate the game as displayed in the early minutes of the first half.
Medeama SC came close through Sowah once again but his thunderbolt strike was calmly fisted out by goalkeeper Frederick Asare on the 69th minute.
Isaac Oppong and Eric Serge Zeze were introduced as replacements for Enock Morrison and Solomon Sarfo Taylor but their input yielded no result for the host.
Medeama SC doubled their lead through a penalty after Kwasi Donsu was fouled in the 18-yard box by Augustine Agyapong on the 76th minute of the game.
Defender Vincent Atingah elected himself to struck the ball firmly into the net to give the Tarkwa based outfit a 2-0 lead.
Asante Kotoko failed to reduce the deficit with the chances created in the remaining minutes of the game as it ended in a 2-0 win for Medeama SC.
On the same matchday, Aduana Stars surprisingly dropped points at home to Real Tamale United, allowing second-placed Accra Lions to remain just two points behind them.
Bibiani GoldStars clinched a 1-0 victory over Samartex thanks to a goal from Evans Owusu, ending their losing streak. Elsewhere, Dreams FC defeated Nsoatreman by the same scoreline.
