Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most common cause of death globally. An estimated 18.5 million people die from CVD every year according to World Health Organization (WHO). Coronary heart disease or strokes were the major causes of these deaths.
World Heart Day is observed and celebrated annually on September 29, with the aim of increasing awareness of cardiovascular health diseases and how to control them to negate their global impact.
Through this the PATH Ghana which is the implementing partner for the Healthy Heart Africa (HHA) program in Ghana together with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate has organized free health heart check for the people of Kwadaso Municipality at the Sofoline bus terminal and to educate them on how to prevent and control CVDs.
This year’s theme, “Use Heart For Every Heart” was purposely used to present an opportunity for people to unite in the fight against CVD and reduce the global disease burden.
Speaking with the Senior Technical Advisor in charge of Non-Communicable Diseases PATH Ghana, Dr. Robert Yeboah, he stressed on the misconceptions about CVD that chubby and fat people are those likely to get CVD’s as he hammered the main causes.
“Unfortunately, that claim by people are false and anybody can get CVD. The main causes of cardiovascular disease are modifiable factors, which include lack of exercise, smoking, and a poor diet,” he said.
Dr. Yeboah also asserted as to why they chose to celebrate the day with people of Sofoline bus terminal. He explained, “Three-quarters of heart-related deaths occur in low and middle-income countries. People in these countries have less access to early detection and integrated health care so we chose to bring it to the people to remind and educate them on concerted actions needed to help them control the risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.”
He then urge all people to participate in this international health day to raise awareness and at least reduce the rate which people are dying from CVDs.
“People can choose to start by choosing to take good care of your heart by getting enough exercise, quit smoking and eat healthily as is a great day to start.
“Take advantage of a free heart health check if your clinic offers it. If you are an employer, reward your employees for doing heart-healthy activities.
Participate in a heart walk or other fund-raising event. Donate to the World Heart Federation or a local organization that promotes healthy hearts. Whatever you do, be sure to share on social media with #WorldHeartDay”, he ended.
