Concerns are emerging over recent promotions of senior military officers sanctioned by President Nana Akufo-Addo, as reports indicate that a specific officer has lodged a complaint against the Military High Command.
This officer, formerly a Brigadier General, is under scrutiny for alleged misconduct, particularly for engaging in extortion practices involving soldiers on peacekeeping missions.
The accused officer purportedly engaged in the sale of United Nations Peacekeeping slots to soldiers who were not eligible for such missions since 2019. In doing so, he reportedly deprived soldiers who were legitimately eligible for peace missions to countries like Sudan, The Gambia, Mali, and Lebanon.
It is reported that the officer extorted up to US$8000 from soldiers returning from peace missions. While these soldiers received US$12,700 for their service, the accused officer allegedly took US$8000 from their earnings, leaving them with only US$4,000.
Some of the soldiers who were not originally qualified for peacekeeping missions were allegedly selected by the senior officer through payment of US$8000, using a vague label “GOC Admin.” This situation led to some soldiers repeatedly participating in these missions while others were excluded.
Despite the petition filed against the senior officer detailing these allegations of misconduct, it is claimed that the military high command treated the matter with disdain. Instead of facing consequences for his actions, the accused officer has been promoted and assigned to critical responsibilities.
This development has stirred discontent among soldiers and officers alike, prompting discussions about the apparent decline in the Ghana Armed Forces’ integrity.
