Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is demanding the immediate halting of payment of ex-gratia to Members of Parliament (MPs) who continue to win their seats and return to the August House after the election.
The Senior Programmes Officer for Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD), Paul Nana Kwabena Aborampah Mensah has stated that there is nowhere in the constitution that states that, members of parliament need to receive ex gratia at the end of every 4-year service term
“it is found nowhere in any section of the constitution that parliamentarians should receive ex-gratia. The constitution rather states that a parliamentarian who has served the parliamentary house for a minimum of four years should be given a token when they leave their office,” he said.
According to him, it is great news that the Paramount Chief of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV rejected the GHc365, 000 that was paid into his account as ex-gratia for being a member of the Council of State.
He stated that Ghanaians need to know that, accountability is not about waiting till elections so elections are not the right point for accountability from any government.
Mr. Aborampah Mensah opined that it is time Ghanaians demonstrate against the Constant ex gratia given to MPs every four years.
He added that the country will only have peaceful and proper security if every citizen is not frustrated in the country.
He further added that there should be a national conversation on members of parliament receiving ex gratia every four years.
