Persons who identify with the LGBTQI+ community say they are living in constant fear as they anticipate attacks and various forms of abuse, following the passage of the anti LGBTQI bill.
The controversial anti-gay bill was passed by Ghana’s parliament after months of disagreements on the forms of punishment.
The bill if assented to, will make persons who engage in same-sex intercourse face Up to 3 years of imprisonment, and 6 to 10 years of imprisonment for anyone who produces, procures, or distributes material deemed to be promoting LGBT+ activities.
GHOne TV’s Awisi Dede Djangay sat with two persons who associate with LGBTQI+ who want the proponents and supporters of the bill to focus on the bread and butter issues of the country rather than the sexual orientation of members of the community. They also accused main proponent Sam George of hating the community, a phenomenon that they describe is against humanity and their fundamental human rights.
