The Susana Wesley Mission Auxiliary (SUWMA) of the Kumasi North Diocese has taken a bold step to promote healthy living by organizing a local food competition as part of activities to mark Ghana Month.

The event, which took place at the Kwadaso Methodist Church in Kumasi, brought together 21 SUWMA groups from various circuits across the Ashanti Region.

Participants prepared and displayed a wide range of Ghanaian indigenous dishes, highlighting the richness and nutritional value of local cuisine.

Addressing the media at the event, the Diocesan Chairperson, Mrs. Esi Sakyi Appiah, stated that the competition was designed to encourage Ghanaians to return to their roots by prioritizing locally prepared meals.

She noted that many Ghanaian dishes are rich in nutrients and can significantly improve health when consumed regularly.

“Our local foods are very healthy and nutritious. This initiative is to remind people that we don’t need to rely heavily on foreign or fast foods when we have better options right here,” she said.

Some executives of the group also stressed that the increasing dependence on fast foods poses health risks, urging families to adopt the habit of preparing meals at home.

They further advised parents to take an active role in monitoring the eating habits of their children to ensure proper growth and development.

The competition not only celebrated Ghanaian culture but also served as a platform to educate the public on the importance of healthy eating through indigenous foods.
