“Beware of Fake Cables,” – GECA warns.

In a scheme to rake in profits, several importers of electrical cables and other materials are flooding the market with fake products that do not meet critical safety requirements.

The Association’s concerns have been confirmed by the outcome of a recent market surveillance conducted by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) which has identified over 6,000 fake electricals materials.

According to the association, these fake electrical materials are dangerous for use as they could cause fire and or electrocution (death).

“An electrical system consists of several components: cables, switches,sockets, outlets,fuse/circuit breakers, luminaries among others. A single substandard electrical product in any electrical system is a HAZARD that can cause a premises to be razed by fire, cause life threatening injuries and even electrocution.

Identifying a good electrical product is daunting. The Association therefore wishes to caution electrical practitioners and the general public to beware.

“We encourage all to buy their electrical materials from credible, tried and tested dealers as they are likely to offer quality and value for money.

They however appealed to the Ghana Standard Authority and the Energy Commission to expedite the passage of the Law on electrical accessories.

They are optimistic that, when the law comes into force,it would help weed out unscrupulous dealers from the Ghanaian market.
