The Founder and Leader of the Action People’s Party (APP), Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah, has called the Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s ongoing 15-day campaign tour in the Ashanti Region a “waste of time and useless.”
Speaking at a press meeting, Asamoah criticised the government’s unfulfilled promises to the Ashanti Region, especially regarding infrastructure projects and healthcare.
In a direct critique of the government’s track record, Nana Kwame Asamoah remarked, “Before the NPP came to power, they promised the people of Ashanti five interchanges. Today, they have not delivered even one of them.”
He emphasized his personal connection to the region, saying, “As a native of Ashanti, I won’t sit down for them to lure our people again in the coming elections.”
Highlighting ongoing challenges at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Asamoah pointed to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s recent efforts to seek funding for the hospital as evidence of government neglect.
“When His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is begging money to fix the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, it’s evident the government has failed the people of Ashanti,” he noted, stressing that Ashanti remains a stronghold for the NPP despite unmet expectations.
Nana Kwame Asamoah also criticised the 45 NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) representing the Ashanti Region, which according to him 9 of whom hold cabinet positions, accusing them of failing to serve the region’s interest.
He commented, “They should be ashamed of themselves for failing their people.”
Turning his attention to the NPP’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, he warned against divisive rhetoric, especially from someone with deep ties to the Ashanti Region.
He cautioned, “His recent utterances could cause war and bring divisions in the country.” As a royal from Manhyia Palace, Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s statements, according to Asamoah, have the potential to escalate tensions during and after the campaign season.
With just 26 days remaining until Ghanaians head to the polls, political parties are intensifying their campaign efforts.
Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour in Ashanti, aimed at rallying support in the NPP’s traditional base, has sparked debate as leaders like Nana Kwame Asamoah question the incumbent government’s commitment to the region.
As the election date draws near, Nana Kwame Asamoah’s statements underscore the growing scrutiny of political promises and accountability, especially from leaders with strong ties to Ghana’s pivotal regions.
