Residents of Biyaa, a community near Adubinso in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, are living in constant fear due to relentless attacks by land guards.
These armed thugs, reportedly hired by the chief of Kumasi Pampaso, have been harassing landowners, demolishing buildings, and seizing properties with little regard for the law.
According to the Biyaa Land Owners Association, the land guards often invade properties under development, attacking workers and residents alike.
They are said to operate with impunity, emboldened by the alleged backing of influential individuals in society. Despite repeated complaints to the Ghana Police Service, the situation continues to deteriorate, with the police seemingly powerless to act.
In a recent press conference, Pastor Simon Bonsa, the PRO of the Biyaa Land Owners Association, lamented the suffering of the residents over the past two years.
“For over two years now, the people of this area have been subjected to harassment by these land guards, leading to the death of one individual,” he revealed.
Pastor Bonsa added that the land guards frequently mention that they are acting on behalf of the Kumasi Pampaso Chief, Nana Gyamfi Kumanin III.
“They tell us openly that they were sent by Nana Gyamfi Kumanin III and can shoot and kill us, claiming that no authority can hold them accountable.
“We are pleading with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene because we will no longer tolerate this harassment.”
An elderly resident, Maame Akua Nyantakyiwaa, tearfully shared her experience, explaining how the thugs destroyed her building, which had been financed through a bank loan.
“These thugs have collapsed my building, and if I see them again, there will be bloodshed,” she warned.
Other residents echoed similar sentiments, pleading with the Asantehene to enforce his directive that no land guards should operate on his lands. “If this does not stop, we will arm ourselves and face them,” one resident remarked.
Nana Boakye Isaac, who spoke on behalf of the Biyaa chief, expressed the frustration of the community, stating, “Many of the residents are helpless because complaints to the police have yielded no results. We don’t want to take the law into our own hands.”
He appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to come to their aid and restore peace in the area.
