A Former Founding Elder of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bekwai Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Adu Boampong Augustine popularly known as Zito is of the view that some Asantes developed a hatred for former President Jerry John Rawlings and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) due to the introduction of PNDC LAW 111.
In 1985, then Military Rule Leader John Jerry Rawlings introduced PNDC Law 111 to prevent families from inheriting the properties of their deceased relatives.
Speaking in an interview with AMBASSADOR TV monitored by MyNewsGh.com Zito showered praises on former President Jerry John Rawlings for introducing the PNDC Law to prevent nephews’ inheritance of their deceased uncles’ properties.
“Before the introduction to PNDC LAW 111, Uncles had no option but to give their daughters to their nephews just to make their children and wives have access to their properties
When it comes to Akan customs and traditions, nephews are eligible to inherit their deceased uncles’ properties, but after the inheritance, the family of the deceased will take full control of the deceased’s properties so PNDC Law 111 prevented the deceased’s family from full control of the properties” Zito told Osei Kwadwo
Zito added “After the introduction of PNDC LAW 111, some Asantes developed a hatred for JJ Rawlings because the law didn’t support their actions after their deceased’s family”
“Though all the stories circulating about JJ Rawlings were that during his military regime, some Asante businessmen suffered, that is just 30 per cent of the reason why some Asantes developed a hatred for JJ Rawlings and NDC. 70 per cent of the hatred is because of the introduction of PNDC LAW 111”
“I witnessed JJ Rawling’s military rule though some of us didn’t understand him. But now if you compare what current politicians are doing after democratic rule was reintroduced to what happened under JJ Rawlings’s military rule, I can boldly say democracy is not for Ghana because the military rule will help Ghana more than democracy”
“Majority of the things we have heard about JJ Rawlings and Kwame Nkrumah are false, but some people are spreading the falsehood about them just to make the younger generations also develop more hatred for JJ Rawlings and Dr Kwame Nkrumah in pursuit of their selfish interests.” He revealed.
