International Relations Expert, Kwame Agyenim has said that the Ghana Card is only good for identification so he does not believe it can ever be used as a passport for travels.

According to him, the claims made by the vice president, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia on the Ghana card becoming a passport is not valid because the international community and stakeholders have not supported and facilitated it.

He explained that the whole world embraced a passport in 1920 as the only formal document for travel so a Ghana card cannot replace it if it does not have global backing and support.

He advised that the vice president should refrain from making some incorrect statements in the public domain which will be a disgrace to the government.

He continued that, the vice president should be patient to crosscheck the information and not rush to deliver sugarcoated speeches but rather results-oriented and correct ones which will be beneficial to the average Ghanaian.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has clarified that the Ghana Card cannot be used as a sole document for the purposes of international traveling yet.

This means the passport and travel certificate remain the official documents for traveling outside the country.

Sector Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, gave this clarification, in response to questions in Parliament on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

The rollout of the Ghana Card sparked conversations after the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, said the card has fully met the requirements for an E-passport, despite a rejection  by the Internation Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO,).

The Vice President had earlier suggested the Ghana card would be recognized as an electronic passport in 197 countries by 2022.
