A Justice of the Supreme Court, Jones Dotse, has said that without doubt Ghana, just as many other countries around the world, is going through crisis.

From geopolitics, economy to climate change, he said, the world is currently going through a severe situation that requires sure-footed response.

Justice Dotse said these during the 19th Triennial Conference of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association (CMJA) in Accra on Monday, September 5.

The CMJA Conference, which brings together Chief Justices, Judges, Magistrates and judicial officers from Commonwealth nations, has, in its five-decade history, helped to promote independence of the judiciary and improvements to legal administration in member countries.

Justice Dotse said “without a doubt, we are in a time of turmoil, a changing world, shifting geopolitical signs, economic uncertainty and accelerating climate change are a hardy mix that requires sure footed response”.

“Should we throw our hands in despair? No. In times like these, the role of associations such as ours must be empathized as we look for solutions and responses that may be beneficial to all. To be certain, access to justice may be a key feature in any of the solutions that we will fashion out to respond to any and all of this crisis that we face.”

The conference was opened by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr Bawumia urged the Justices and Magistrates to embrace technology to boost justice delivery.

In a contemporary world where digital innovations are making things and life easier, he urged the CMJA to embrace the power of digital tools and innovations to boost access to justice, as well as enhance judicial systems.

“I also shared with them, the story of how Ghana has already started digitising its judicial process, and reiterated our Government’s commitment to it, to ensure easy and convenient access to justice in our country,” Dr said in a Facebook post after opening the event.
