Government urged to prioritize investment in Mental Health.

Although Mental Health issues have seen some remarkable improvements due to awareness creation, stigmatisation and discrimination still have negative impact on persins with mental health conditions and their families.

 

Government has been urged to develop and strengthen evidence -based programmes to address the mental health needs of young people.

The Executive Secretary of Mind freedom Ghana, Mr. Dan Taylor said, Government must put in place deliberate interventions, with the support of national policy – makers and programme managers, to prioritise and advocate for funding to finance the mental needs of the country.

According to him, Government must get the mental health fund up and running and conclude the conversation of having the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cover mental healthcare in the nation.

Mr. Dan Taylor made this known at a community awareness programme on Mental Health in the Atwima Nwanbiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.

The Ashanti Regional mental health coordinator Madam Faustina Nuako expressed satisfaction on how mental health education and awareness have improved.

She was also elated the region has facilities and staff dedicated to mental health unlike previously when all these were a challenge.
