Unemployed Man Threatens To End His Life By August If Nothing Works Out For Him

Dickson Assan, an accountant and youth career coach, has made a public appeal to help a young unemployed Ghanaian accountant secure a job.

In a post shared on his LinkedIn page on Thursday, July 25, 2024, he stated that a young accounting and finance professional, Michael Adotey Nyanu, reached out to him on LinkedIn about the significant challenges he has been facing in his job search and has contemplated ending his life if he doesn’t find employment by the end of August this year.

Dickson Assan said Michael expressed deep frustration and desperation over the repeated setbacks and encounters he has had with scammers preying on job seekers.

“When someone threatens to commit suicide, I take it very seriously. It doesn’t matter whether it’s true or not.

“The core of the message shows a frustrated man. He is trying all he could but has been unsuccessful so far. Then he encounters the usual fraudsters who like to prey on desperate job seekers.

“In all his writing, this sentence ‘I have decided to end it all by August if nothing works’ is the reason why I am writing this post.
I am trying to reach out to him and get his CV but have been unsuccessful so far,” he wrote.

He appealed to the public to join forces and help Michael secure employment, thereby saving not only a life, but also a family from the brink of despair.

“Remember, no matter how tough things get, hashtag#suicide is not an option. Life is precious, and with time, things can improve”, he stated.

This concerning story highlights the struggles faced by many young Ghanaians.

According to the 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) released by the Ghana Statistical Service, about 1.9 million youth aged 15 to 35 years in Ghana were Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) in the third quarter of 2023.

It added that females (1.2 million) are disproportionately affected, with a NEET rate of 21.0% compared to males (15.0%).

The Greater Accra Region has the highest number of youth NEET, with over half a million (565,360) young people not engaging in any of the three activities.

With nearly 2 million young people struggling to survive, it is crucial that key stakeholders – including government, private sector, educational institutions, and community leaders – collaborate to provide vital support, resources, and opportunities for their empowerment.
