Government’s spokesperson on Economy, Manasseh Atta Boahen, has urged individuals who smuggle fertilizers out of the country to desist from doing so as this has contributed to the hike in prices of foodstuffs which is making the government unpopular.

Speaking to Kweku Dawuro on Movement In The Morning Political Show on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 , Mr. Boahen noted that although Ghana’s economy has been gravely affected by the Ukraine-Russia war which is not peculiar to Ghana alone, the government is working assiduously to ensure the economy bounces back to normalcy.

“Most of the fertilizers are imported from Ukraine and that is the reason we are working to ensure we produce organic fertilizers in Ghana. But the truth is there are people along the border lines who place the fertilizers on the back of camels and export to neighbouring countries” he lamented.

Adding that, “we distributed about 100,000 fertilizers; however there are some farmers who sell them once they receive it and that is affecting food production in Ghana which is making the government unpopular”.

He disclosed that there are a lot of things the government is doing to resolve some of these issues. “We will soon be monitoring the usage of fertilizer on farmlands,” he stressed.
