Woman, 55, Stabs Mother To Death At Abuakwa Asenemaso; Attempts Suicide

A 55-year-old woman, Joyce Boateng, has killed her 76-year-old physically challenged mother, Afia Sarpong, in an unprovoked attack at Abuakwa Asenemaso in Atwima Nwabiagya South of the Ashanti Region in the wee hours of Monday, 17th June, 2024. According to reports gathered from the crime scene, the suspect, a mother of three, inflicted multiple stab wounds on her mother for being responsible for her numerous misfortunes in life.

Speaking in an interview, the Head of the Asona family at Asenemaso, George Badu Gyan, said the suspect locked the door after commiting the crime, and fled the scene.

Refuting the possibility of any mental disorder, Abusuapanin Gyan said upon her arrest, the suspect confessed that she committed the act after she had received prophecies that her mother was the one bewitching her. He revealed that the suspect was eventually found and arrested at Asenemaso Cemetery where she had drank some weedicide to commit suicide.

“After killing her mother, Joyce locked the door and headed for the cemetery. Unfortunately, some of the residents saw blood stains on her clothes and raised an alarm where she was we apprehended.”

The Assemblyman for Asenemaso Electoral Area, Isaac Adu Boateng – who was in the company of the police to collect the lifeless body – corroborated the account by Abusuapanin Gyan. According to him the suspect had no intention of of killing her mother until some prophets polluted her. He has, therefore, appealed to media to educate the public against prophecies that could potentially bring chaos amongst members of a family.

“The worrying trend is that some women are beginning to have more confidence in pastors than their husbands. I wonder why a pastor could blame Joyce’s circumstances on her a person living with a disability.”

Meanwhile, some of the residents have cited several instances where the suspect was seen issuing threats to her mother. According to them, despite her tantrums, they never anticipated that she would carry out such a heinous crime against her own biological mother. They have, therefore, advocated for a swift trial and hefty punishment for the suspect to serve as a deterrent.
