Founder and Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai , claims he has been attacked by some armed men in his office at Patase, Kumasi.
Founder and Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai claims his office at Patase, Kumasi has been attacked by some armed men and has reported same to the police in Kumasi Central Police Command.
Cars parked in front of the office were vandalised.
The gunmen allegedly rushed to the office of the former presidential aspirant at about 4:30 pm on Monday, shooting randomly.
A member of Odike’s team, Francis Addae , claims the gunmen ordered staff in the office to lie down, assaulted them physically and ransacked the office.
“some unidentified group stormed his office with guns and vandalised some items at his office.”
He also alleged the “armed group also shot into my saloon car.”
“I heard three gunshots,” his body guard told Akoma FM’s Ekow Darko in an interview. He added that “Odike managed to escape.”
Odike, who was not in the office has reported the incident to the Kumasi Central Police Command.
The motive for Monday’s attack is unknown, but the businessman turned politician recently incurred the wrath of Manhyia Palace in Kumasi for his comments on the role of chiefs in illegal mining.
Speaking on a Kumasi-based radio station, Mr. Akwasi Addai unequivocally criticised chiefs for failing to help end the ‘galamsey’ menace.
He charged the youth to rise up and demonstrate against chiefs if the traditional rulers fail to come clear on their roles in or stance against illegal mining.
But his comment was described as distasteful and unsubstantiated, meant to dent the image of Manhyia.
Some chiefs of the Kumasi Traditional Council on Friday performed rituals and slaughtered a ram to ostensibly banish Odike from Manhyia.
The chiefs consider the words of Odike as disrespectful, hence he should have no business at Manhyia.
Meanwhile, the UPP leader seems unfazed by the development. In an interview with JoyNews, he insisted that he has been vindicated by the development.
He added that a retraction of his comment is now out of the question as the ‘battle lines have been drawn.”
A visibly shaken Odike expressed hope that the police take action to bring the perpetrators to book as he also moves to beef up his own security.

The Asanteman Traditional Council, at an emergency meeting held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on 19th August 2022, expressed its anger over some utterances made by Akwasi Addai Odike in violation of customs and tradition of Asanteman.
Speaking further to the development, Nana Baffour Asabre Ababio who is the Asantehene’s Sumankwahene hinted on Kumasi-based Akoma FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, all is set to haul the businessman cum politician before the Asanteman Council.
‘No one should think it is finished. It’s not. We’ll summon him to come and explain his bases of allegations. In the olden days, what he did he could have had his head chopped off. He cannot bring the name of the Golden Stool which represents Asanteman into disrepute. He will be facing the spirit of Asanteman and we know what we are doing, Baffour Sumankwahene Asabre Ababio revealed.
‘Even what Odike said is right, that is not way to address issues. Is that how someone who wants to become President speaks?’ the Otumfuo Spiritualist quizzed.
“We have evidence that Odike sat on radio and spoke against the Asanteman. He has set precedence. He has also incited the youth against the chiefs of Asanteman. Now politics has taken center stage in all our lives. The politicians are supposed to consult Nananom on matters but they don’t even consult us”, he fumed
