Heartland FC’s Head Coach Died In A Horrific Accident; Players Hospitalized

Heartland FC were involved in a ghastly accident, with their head coach and former Nigeria goalkeeper Christian Obi losing his life.

According to sketchy reports on the club’s Facebook page, the accident occurred on Friday, August 23 in Okigwe en route to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, where the Naze Millionaires were to participate in the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT preseason tournament.

Some players and staff of a football club owned by the Imo State Government, Heartland FC sustained injuries and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Aged 57, Obi, who coached the team last season, was a Nigeria youth international goalkeeper who competed in the Men’s Football Tournament of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

“The vehicle in its attempt to dodge an uncoming vehicle collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from another accident.

“Though no death was recorded some players and officials sustained injuries and have been taken to the hospital.”

The statement failed to capture the death of the coach who disclosed dead at the hospital few minutes after he was taken to the accident ward for medical attention.
